The Annual R. Brinkley Smithers Award


The R. Brinkley Smithers Award is presented annually by The Christopher D. Smithers Foundation as a permanent memorial to its founder, R. Brinkley Smithers. It recognizes individuals who have publicly shared the message of hope and the promise of help, and individuals whose work in the field of alcoholism has had a positive impact in the fight against America's most misunderstood disease.

Around the edge of the medal, it says, "For outstanding contributions to the field of alcoholism..."

    Martha Baker
    With respect and admiration for her lifetime dedication, volunteer work and philanthropic efforts to raise public awareness about the disease of alcoholism. She courageously and successfully challenged the corporate community to contribute and to establish Employee Alcoholism Programs.

    Leadership To Keep Children Alcohol Free
    For courageous and outstanding commitment to drawing public attention to the nation's problem of underage drinking, particularly among 9 to 15 year olds, and for making prevention and education a national priority.

    He has given selflessly of his time, talents and resources in serving the field of alcoholism. He has raised public awareness about this disease and has helped to reduce the stigma by getting out the message of help, hope and recovery. He never says, no. He is truly "out of this world."
