This special award was presented in 2002 to Betty Ford.

Each year, The Christopher D. Smithers Foundation, Inc. presents an award to individuals who exemplify the mission of the Smithers Foundation... those who have publicly shared the message of hope and the promise of help; individuals whose work in the field has had a positive impact in the fight against America's most misunderstood disease.

This award is presented each year by Adele C. Smithers. The award reads "For caring and sharing, for dedication to raising public awareness of alcoholism, by courageously speaking out - carrying the message of help, hope and recovery."

The R. Brinkley Smithers Distinguished Scientist Award


Presented by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). Following Mr. Smithers' death in 1994, ASAM has honored his memory with an annual award and a scientific lecture presented at the ASAM annual conference.
